MARTIMER-ENGLISH DICTIONARY

Technically, Maritimers DO speak English. This dictionary will help you define the terms which don't happen to SOUND like English.

NOTE ABOUT THE ORIGINS

Not all terms are universally Maritimer in origin.

ACROST
From one side to the other. He swam acrost the cove.

AFTER
Did or done. I was after telling you not to do that.

ARSE
Ass. Kiss me friggin' arse.

BOY
A floating object anchored on the water to warn or guide. I run me boat right into the boy.

BREEZE
A small fruit that grows on bushes or vines. Strawbreeze, razzbreeze, bluebreeze are types of breeze.

B'YE (nf)
A young man; male child; son. C'mere me b'ye.

DARE (ac)
1. In or at a place. He is over dare.
2. A word found at the end of every sentence. Dat's one of doze tings, dare.

DAT (ac)
Used for pointing out or indicating an object. Put dat ting with doze tings.

DAY (ac)
Some unspecified people. Day went dat way, dare.

DEEZE (ac)
Plural of dis. Put deeze tings over dare.

DEM (ac)
The objective from of day. Dey were a gift, but I don't like dem.

DEN (ac)
At that time. I went to his house, but he wasn't dare den.

DEST
A peice of furtinture with one or more drawers and a flat or sloping top on which to write or lay books, papers, etc. I carved me name on me school dest.

DIS (ac)
Pointing out or indicating an object. Dis refers to soemthing close and dat refers to something far away.

DOZE (ac)
Plural of dis. Doze tings over dare.

FRIGGIT
Never mind; forget it; drop the subject. If it ain't working, friggit, we'll buy another one.

GUM TUCKIES
Rubber boots. The term is derived from the fact that they are made of gum rubber and you tuck your pant legs into them. Unless you're wearing shorts.

HEEZE
Possive form of he. That's heeze hat, not mine.

HIPPY
To have large hips. She's a good looking girl, but she's a bit hippy.

LIBARY
A building or room where you can read and borrow books. I'm going to the libary to get a book on cod fishing.

ME
Possive form of I. I can't find me friggin hat.

MIND
Pay attention. Mind what I'm saying to you.

PATTREN
An arrangement of shapes, lines, colours, ect. That Tiffany lamp shade has some right nice pattrens.

RETARDITT
Not of sound mind; messed up; not right. He run heeze boat right into that boy, I think heeze retarditt.

RIGHT
Much; greatly; extremely. That's right simple to do.

SPILT
Past tense of spill. I spilt all me beer.

TING (ac)
Any object or substance. What's dat ting over dare?

TO (nf)
1. At. Stay where you're to.
2. Closed. Pull the door to.

WESTREN
